Woman of the Month Interview

Q: How does your organization promote the development of women?
Women In Business Summit (WIB Summit) is designed to educate, inspire and encourage in both their professional and personal lives. It's a format for women to come together, network and attend educational workshops that assist them to be the best that they can be. Women In Business Summit aims to be a quality resource for women when it comes to finding answers pertaining to their personal and professional development.

Q: What role have you played in those efforts?

I am involved with every aspect of planning and executing the WIB Summit, from identifying sponsors and partners, recruiting speakers, developing the program format, marketing (including our new website: www.wibsummit.com, social media, email marketing) and building the right team to ensure that we are providing an excellent event.

Q: How do you add value to your current career?

I am continuously learning and researching the issues/topics that are relevant and important to women; hosting focus groups, attending workshops and conferences and obtaining feedback from women to develop quality workshops for WIB Summit.

Q: Is a college degree necessary for success in your profession?

A college degree always helps. The more credentials you have, the more credibility you have when you’re going into a situation where others are seeing you on paper before meeting you in person. The other part of your success is your experience and being able to connect with people to demonstrate what makes you unique, which can sometimes be more important than your list of degrees.

Q: What hurdles/setbacks that you faced in your career? How did you overcome it/them?

Hearing "No" from potential sponsors/partners and trying to work with media outlets to promote an event that is new.  I have managed these challenges by knowing that “No” doesn’t hurt, it just helps you to refine your approach or leave the window open for another opportunity.  I remain persistent; I network with people who are trying to achieve similar goals. I work to align the event with individuals and organizations that support the mission of WIB Summit.  My team and I deliver a quality event.  We say “thank you” and show appreciation for the support.

Q: Given a chance, would you choose a different career? Why (not)?

No. Event planning is my favorite thing to do; I get to do what I love to do when working with my clients for Events of Joy and in planning the WIB Summit.  It brings all of my skill sets together from leadership development; selling; developing marketing plans to time management.

Q: Describe yourself in three words...

kind, honest and helpful.

Q: What are you best at?

I am best at planning events.  And that can be in support of the WIB Summit mission or for the clients of Events of Joy; corporate meetings; social events; weddings and non-profit events and so on.

Q: How do you achieve work/life balance?

I grab time when I can.  I try to schedule time a free weekend when I’m not doing anything work related when it’s just about me and or my family.

Q:  Do you have/have you had mentors/role models? What role have they played in your personal/professional development?

My strongest and most important role model is my Mother. She set the standard and is the ultimate example of an exceptional woman. She is an amazing person; intelligent; funny; kind; loving; compassionate; fashionable; and a sharp business woman.  She raised four children on her own, supported us all through college, and has been an inspiration in everything that I accomplish.

Q: What is your favorite quote and by whom?

"Nothing is easy to the unwilling" - Nikki Giovanni

Q: What are your interests in your leisure time?

When I get together with family and friends it’s always a great time.

Q: Are there any goals/ dreams that you are yet to fulfill?

I’m working to make Events of Joy  the premier event planning company in New England.  I would like WIB Summit to be known to women in this region as the event to attend to get the resources that they need to succeed in both their personal and professional goals. One day I would like to open a boutique for women where they can always find the right outfit for whatever occasion.

Q: Networking – What tips can you suggest for successful networking?

It is important to know why you are attending a networking event and then after the event, determine if your goal was accomplished.
